AB 1821 was passed on September 30, 2026, amending Government Code section 7922.535.

Effective January 1, 2027, public agencies will have 10 business days, rather than 10 calendar days, to make their initial determination under the California Public Records Act. For a properly invoked unusual circumstances extension, the period will be up to 14 business days instead of 14 calendar days. This change benefits clients with a 4/10 or 9/80 schedule by allowing us to account for weekends, holidays, and non-operative business days.
